3-year fixed-term contract
The Consumer Council is seeking a dedicated and qualified legal professional to join its Legal Affairs Division as Assistant Legal Counsel. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to consumer protection and advocacy in Hong Kong through legal advisory, governance, and public engagement. Ideal candidates will have a strong interest in consumer law, a passion for consumer rights, and the ability to collaborate across teams to uphold the Council’s mission.
Responsibilities:
- Assisting Legal Counsel and the Director of Legal Affairs in advising on all legal matters of the Council, such as contract drafting, policy review, response to public / media inquiries and contentious matters
- Assessing and presenting applications received by the Consumer Legal Action Fund, monitoring case progress and assisting with administration of the Fund
- Conducting in-depth legal research and studies in relation to legal protection for consumers
- Assisting with upholding good corporate and data governance of the Council, including drafting and updating internal policies and guidelines
- Performing other duties as assigned by management such as participating in outside committee meetings, media interviews, training and public events for and on behalf of the Council
Requirements:
- Law degree from a distinguished university in an internationally recognised common law jurisdiction
- Qualified barrister or solicitor and admitted to practice in the HKSAR or in a comparable common law jurisdiction
- At least 1 year of post-call or post-admission experience is preferred (newly qualified lawyers may also be considered based on overall merit)
- Good grasp of civil litigation practice and procedures
- Solid writing and presentation skills
- Strong compliance and governance mindset
- Have the vision and passion to work as a consumer advocate
- Strong collaboration skills and a team player, being able to work effectively with various divisions to achieve common goals
- Have excellent command of written and spoken English and Chinese including Cantonese and Putonghua
Terms of Appointment & Fringe Benefits
Appointment will be offered on a 3-year fixed-term contract. Fringe benefits include paid leave, medical insurance and MPF.
