It has been almost a year since the COVID-19 became a global pandemic. Citizens of Hong Kong experienced face mask shortage at the beginning of the pandemic. Later, the situation improved, and there was also no lack of face mask supply in the market. For a while, some members of the public instead turned to the aesthetics of masks. Later, when the fourth wave hit, everyone continued to stay vigilant in the fight against the pandemic and again focussed on the protective and preventive efficacies of face masks. Properly wearing surgical masks is effective in preventing diseases transmitted through respiratory droplets. After our last test in 2017, the Council again collected 30 face mask models for testing, examining the quality of disposable masks in the market. The results showed that in terms of two very important prevention indicators, Bacterial Filtration Efficiency (BFE) and Particle Filtration Efficiency (PFE), most specimens reached 95% or above. Performance was in general satisfactory. However, about one-third of the specimens did not perform well in the harness (earloop) tension test.
