Consumers have hit out at unscrupulous retailers for taking advantage of the surging demand for masks to raise the prices excessively.

The Consumer Council has received many calls - 28 complaints and 17 enquiries for advice - from consumers expressing strong dissatisfaction over rising prices charged by some retailers.

In many cases, according to the complainants, these masks are several times more expensive than just a couple of days ago. In one extreme case, the price sought was allegedly $100.

The latest price survey of the Council, conducted on 48 retail outlets, indicated that some models may indeed be temporarily sold out at some outlets. But supplies are on their way.

Prices are generally higher as are the demand with popular brands and models. For instance a $9 unit was being sold at $20 to $50, according to the survey.

Consumers are advised to buy with care only those masks which suit the purpose of protecting them against the pneumonia outbreak. Some face masks are not designed for the purpose and may give the users a false sense of security.

Consumers are advised not to buy in excess of what they actually will need. There is no need for panic buying as such behaviour will only aggravate the situation.

Consumers should also bear in mind that the use of mask is only one means of protection against the virus. They should take other sensible precautions such as keeping good personal hygiene and health.

On the other hand, the Council has been in contact with some major manufacturers and agents of masks to ensure adequate supply of their products in the market. The Council has been assured by the suppliers that their production lines have been speeded up to cater to the increasing demand in the Hong Kong market.

Consumers who wish to buy in bulk (e.g. a batch of 20-50) can also contact their agents direct to take advantage of the wholesale price. Consumers are strongly urged to consider this option to counter the unscrupulous practice of excessive retail pricing.
