Follow-up of Breakage of Intra-uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD)

  • 2006.01.18

In December 2005 The Family Planning Association of Hong Kong (FPAHK) alerted the public on the breakage of a batch of Intra-uterine Contraceptive Device (IUCD). During the Association's recall exercise, cracks were found in 2 IUCDs of another batch from the same model. For precautionary measure, the Association decided to recall all batches of IUCDs from the same company. The Association is contacting concerned clients for follow-up.

The model of the affected IUCD is Copper T380A supplied by Medico Techno Pte Ltd of Singapore, which is one of the five IUCD suppliers of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). A total of about 4,000 pieces of this model of Copper T380A were used in clinics of FPAHK. Upon discovery of the breakage cases, FPAHK has suspended further insertion of this brand of IUCD since August 2005. All cases have been reported to the Department of Health.

IUCD, used by sixty million women worldwide, is considered to be a safe and effective contraception method. Breakage of IUCD is rare worldwide. There have not been any reports on broken IUCDs causing health hazard to women. Nevertheless, a broken IUCD could lead to reduced contraceptive efficacy. Meanwhile, these clients are advised to use additional birth control methods to avoid unplanned pregnancy.

Clients of FPAHK who have concerns over their IUCDs can call 2919 7725 for advice.
