The 22nd Consumer Rights Reporting Awards Launch of the New Public Voting! Vote for Your Favourite “News Photography Award” and “Tertiary Student Journalism Award” Entries to Win Attractive Prizes

  • 2022.08.15

After a successful run of 21 years, the 22nd Consumer Rights Reporting Awards (CRRA) sets an unprecedented first by introducing public voting to 2 categories – the “News Photography Award” and “News Photography Award” – after its revamp in early 2022. The 3-week public voting period begins today (from 15 August, 7am to 4 September, 12am). The Consumer Council invites the public to vote online for their favourite entries amongst the 5 finalists in each category, which were shortlisted by an expert judging panel. Voters can enter the lucky draw to win attractive prizes worth up to HK$5,000.

First Prize: Gift Card Worth HK$5,000

To promote consumer rights and encourage public participation, successful voters will be entered into a lucky draw for a chance to win attractive prizes and the chance to participate in the award presentation ceremony in October. The 23 prizes include a first prize of a HK$5,000 gift card (1 winner), second prizes of a HK$500 gift card each (2 winners) and third prizes of a HK$200 gift card each (20 winners).

The lucky draw winners will be randomly selected by computer on 21 September 2022. The results will be announced in the Hong Kong Economic Times and The Standard on 30 September 2022, and winners will be notified individually. The Council will consolidate the scores from public voting and the judging panel to select the awardees of the 2 categories. The Gold, Silver, Bronze and Merit Awards  will be announced and conferred at the award presentation ceremony held in late 2022.

Revamped CRRA with a Host of New Features

The CRRA is a prestigious annual award in the industry organised by the Consumer Council with the aim to recognise the excellence of local journalists in reporting issues relating to consumer rights. Since its establishment in 2001, the CRRA has been on a successful run for 21 years. After a comprehensive review at the end of last year, the 22nd Annual Consumer Rights Reporting Awards is now independently organised by the Council, meeting the public with a brand new look. Besides the addition of public voting for 2 categories – the “News Photography Award” and “Tertiary Student Journalism Award”, the Council has kept abreast with media trends and piloted the “Best Use of Social Media in Consumer Advocacy” category to honour excellence in social media journalism.

A new “Topical Reporting Award” has been introduced for the revamped CRRA with “Protecting Consumers Under E-commerce” as the selected topic for 2022. The media are encouraged to produce and broadcast relevant news topics and submit entries next year. Through this topic, the Council hopes to promote the issue of consumer protection in e-commerce under the new normal and empower consumers to protect themselves.
