First-ever 315 Consumer Rights Week in Celebration of the Golden Jubilee 2-day Family-friendly Carnival Filled with Educational Games and Prizes

  • 2024.02.15

The Consumer Council has been walking hand in hand with the citizens of Hong Kong for half a century. To celebrate this milestone, the Council will be organising a series of golden jubilee events based on the theme “Smart ConsumptionFuelling the Economy”. The festivities will kick off with the 315 Consumer Rights Week, held for the first time to echo the World Consumer Rights Day on 15 March. The highlight of the week is a 2-day family-friendly carnival, featuring a variety of free and interesting booth games designed to educate all members of the family on the 8 Consumer Rights while having fun. Over 10,000 gifts, including CHOICE Magazine test samples in satisfactory conditions, will be offered as giveaways and grand draw prizes. Come and have fun at the snapworthy carnival with your family and friends!

Take On 5 Unique Games and Win Over 10,000 Prizes

The 2-day Consumer Rights Carnival will take place at the shopping mall The Wai in Tai Wai from 16 to 17 March. Participants can take part in a giveaway quiz game on an intricately designed consumption chessboard, as well as test their wits and skills in 4 booth games. After completing consumer tasks, participants can redeem from an array of almost 7,000 gift items, including 50th anniversary limited edition eco-friendly bags, consumer rights flying chess sets, wooden tableware sets, and thermal flasks.

In “Piece it Together”, participants need to use their keen eyesight to assemble food nutrition labels to acquire accurate information. “Know the Catch” requires participants to skilfully use a fishing rod to select sustainable consumption scenarios. “Fun Plastic Sorting” is a ball sliding game that enhances understanding of recyclable plastics. “Sharp Eyes & Nimble Fingers” tests participants’ reflexes as they catch falling game sticks and answer questions mainly related to consumers’ right to redress. As for the focal point of the carnival, the “Endless Chess Fun” giant chessboard, participants will draw questions related to daily consumption with each move and advance with correct answers.

Upon collecting 5 stamps by successfully completing all the games, as well as following the Council’s Facebook, Instagram or WeChat page, participants can enter the grand draw for a chance to bring home one of over 70 CHOICE Magazine test samples in satisfactory conditions. Additionally, all visitors will receive a complimentary Consumer Council golden jubilee edition RFID blocking card sleeve or 3-in-1 bookmark. With a total of over 10,000 gifts and prizes, don’t miss out!

For the past 50 years, from wet markets to online shopping, from CHOICE Magazine in print to the Oil Price Watch mobile app and promoting on social media platforms, the Council has been a smart consumption companion in all aspects of life. Visitors can revisit the Council’s development journey at the carnival’s exhibition area, and also take pictures with friends at the snapshot spot for a trip down memory lane on shopping in the old days!

Seminar and Educational Talks Focusing on the Latest Consumption Environment

Given the rapidly evolving consumption environment, the Consumer Rights Week will feature additional activities that address timely topics, such as the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on consumption trends. These include a thematic seminar on “Fair and Responsible Use of AI” for secondary school students across Hong Kong, aimed at improving understanding of AI technology and provoking thoughts on AI’s ethical challenges. Furthermore, a number of educational talks will be held to inform about common types of online scams and preventive measures, among other useful information. Secondary school students and members of the public are welcome to sign up and participate in these educational talks.

Acting as a Shield and Staunch Protector of Consumer Rights

For half a century, the Council has been keeping abreast of and responding to the times, providing the strongest backing possible for consumers. This unwavering commitment to safeguarding consumer rights for the past 50 years is visualised as a solid shield, incorporated into the specially designed logo for the golden jubilee. As a forward-looking consumer organisation, the Council is unfazed by forthcoming challenges and will continue to fulfil its duties. It will strive to discern the most sought-after and critical consumer issues arising from the “new normal”, identify opportunities and challenges within, and strengthen the public’s ability to protect their own rights and interests, ultimately fuelling Hong Kong’s economy by empowering consumers to make smart consumption choices.
