Vacuum cleaners vs electric sweepers - CHOICE # 369

  • 2007.07.16

Vacuum cleaners or electric sweepers? It's a hard choice for the consumers intent on getting quality performance and light portability.

The Consumer Council has conducted a test on 12 models of the appliances comprising 8 bagless, 2 rechargeable mini upright vacuum cleaners and 2 rechargeable electric sweepers.

The bagless models operate similar to a cyclone that dusts are whirled into a special dust receptable while the rechargeable models are designed to replace broom and spade.

The results compared the pros and cons between the two types: in general bagless models are bigger in size and wired, and perform better in dust removal.

The rechargeable models, on the other hand, are relatively more quiet and easier to use.

Vacuum cleaners are apparently not designed with energy efficiency in mind. The bagless samples were measured to be only 11% to 25% in energy efficiency.

For the rechargeable models, two of the samples (upright vacuum cleaners) fared rather unsatisfactorily in the operating time after fully recharged - only 19 minutes. The 2 others (sweepers) were measured to operate about 70 minutes and 2 hours. Full charging usually takes 8 hours to complete.

The models were rated on the basis of: dust removal (50%), ease of use (17.5%), dust emission test (15%), energy efficiency/operation time (5%), dust accumulation test (5%), noise measurement (5%), endurance of nozzle and linings (2.5%).

Consumers can consult the report for the ratings of the samples and choose according to their own needs and requirements.
