Food factory ordered to close

  • 2008.06.17

The Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) today (June 17) ordered the temporary closure of a food factory "Itamae Sushi" at Shop Nos. 4-5, ground floor, Hewlett Centre, 54 Hoi Yuen Road, Kwun Tong for thorough cleansing and disinfection.

During investigations into four clusters of food poisoning outbreaks informed by the Department of Health today, as well as the two food poisoning outbreaks that led to the temporary closure of a restaurant yesterday, the FEHD found that the cases were related to consumption of food manufactured and prepared by the food factory.

"In view of the increasing number of food poisoning outbreaks reported, there is epidemiological ground to support temporary closure of the food factory for thorough cleansing and disinfection," a spokesman for the department said.

The food factory will remain closed until cleansing and disinfection are completed to the satisfaction of the Director of Food and Environmental Hygiene. It can be re-opened only when the director is fully satisfied that the immediate health hazard on the premises has been eliminated.

Under the Public Health and Municipal Services Ordinance, the Director is empowered to quickly close premises that pose immediate health hazards to the public.
