Mattel Inc. has issued a safety alert in relation to the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair (Model Number H4609), and has announced a voluntary recall of the captioned consumer product from retail outlets. In the U.S., Mattel announced a voluntary safety alert on 18 January 2006 in co-operation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Consumers in the U.S. and internationally are advised to stop using the recalled musical chair and to contact Mattel to receive a modification parts kit.
The affected Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair is a plastic infant toy that measures about 17 inches high. It features a blue chair with four green plastic legs and a side table with a purple base and white top. The table holds a clock, book and a lamp. It plays music and teaches children numbers and letters. The model number H4609 can be found on the underside of the seat of the chair.
A child may become lodged between the seatback and side table of the chair, possibly leading to an entrapment of the neck. This can pose a strangulation hazard to young children.
In Hong Kong, the Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair has been on sale since July 2005. To-date, the Hong Kong has not received any consumer calls or incident report relating to the affected chair.
As a precaution, parents are advised to take the Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair away from their children and contact Mattel Hong Kong at Tel: 3185 6542 / 3185 6553 (Monday to Friday 9am - 6pm) to receive a parts kit. The kit contains a plastic piece that connects in between the seatback and side table, preventing the possibility of entrapment. The modification can be done at home, following instructions that are provided.
All Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair stocks at local retail outlets are being withdrawn by Mattel to be modified. The Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chairs will only be re-launched in the market after modification.
