Recall of Infant Formula HN25 Special Formula

  • 2002.09.04

A spokesman for the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD) today (September 4) urged members of the public to immediately stop consuming any Infant Formula Milupa HN25 Special Formula (batch no. BAN010508) and to use other infant formulae instead.

"Among the samples of milk powder collected recently under the department's food surveillance programme , one was confirmed this afternoon to have been contaminated by the bacterium Enterobacter sakazakii. The product is intended for use by babies suffering from diarrhoeal disease," the spokesman explained .

"The FEHD has immediately contacted the importer of the milk product and advised them to remove the product from shelf.

"The recall is only a precautionary measure. The bacterium Enterobacter sakazakii only rarely causes disease in young infants born prematurely or with underlying medial conditions. Infection in new-born babies can lead to inflammation of the gut and meningitis.

"Parents are advised to contact FEHD's special hotline at 2867 5440 should they have any enquires. The hotline will operate until midnight today (September 4) and between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. from tomorrow.

"There should be no cause for undue alarm," the spokesman emphasised.
