Voluntary recall of box fans

  • 2001.09.28

The supplier of a model of box fans, KYT-30, has agreed to recall the product after the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) found that it failed to comply with some safety requirements.

Acting on a complaint, follow-up action by the department revealed that a non-compliant fuse was fitted to the plug of the concerned fan that might pose a hazard to the users in case of an electrical short-circuit fault.

Besides, the insulating materials for some of the component parts of the fans were found having insufficient resistance to heat and fire. The fan guard might also be easily detached from the fan, exposing the fan blade and the basic insulation to the users.

The 12-inch box fans, supplied by YG Cyber Holdings Ltd., were on sale at Mega Warehouse (Hong Kong) Ltd. in August 2001.

A spokesman for the EMSD today (September 28) urged consumers who have purchased these fans to stop using them immediately and return them to the supplier through designated channels as soon as practicable. The supplier will offer cash refund to the affected consumers.

Details of the recall can be obtained by calling the supplier at 2690 3351.
