The Consumer Council has long been dedicated to providing the most comprehensive and practical consumer information to the public through various channels. To cater to the modern audience’s evolving information search and reading habits, the online version of the iconic CHOICE Magazine (available in Chinese only) will become fully available for free starting today (2 January 2025), giving consumers access to consumption-related information on all aspects of daily life anytime and anywhere, empowering smart consumption at all times.
Starting from today, members of the public can visit the CHOICE Magazine section on the Consumer Council’s website (www.consumer.org.hk) to read and download past articles (both free and paid) from issue 302 onwards, including test reports, market updates, “Case in Point” complaint articles, health tips, and environmental protection information, etc. The website also features a tutorial video with step-by-step guidance on reading or downloading articles online. Furthermore, starting from issue 579 of CHOICE Magazine published on 15 January 2025, the public can visit the Council’s website at noon on the publication day (i.e. the day of the press conference) to browse and download the latest issue for free, enjoying access to the most up-to-date consumer information while supporting environmental protection and putting sustainable consumption into action.
Mr Clement Chan Kam-wing, Chairman of the Consumer Council, said, “Making CHOICE Magazine free for all is an important milestone for the Consumer Council. In the face of a rapidly changing consumption environment, it is crucial to enable more people to access reliable and comprehensive consumer information instantly. By making the online version fully free, we hope to empower consumers make smart consumption choices and boost their confidence, thereby fuelling the economy.”
To cater to the needs of different communities, CHOICE Magazine will still be printed in limited quantities and distributed to elderly centres, community organisations, public libraries, etc. as complimentary copies for the public to read. Link REIT will also become a distribution partner, setting up distribution points in 14 of its shopping centres from 1pm the day after each monthly press conference, allowing residents from different districts to pick up a complimentary copy of CHOICE. To promote eco-friendly practices, each distribution point will provide 450 print copies of CHOICE Magazine; and citizens who collect a print copy are encouraged to circulate it with family and friends to share the latest consumer information.
Since its founding in 1976, CHOICE Magazine has sold over 16 million print and online copies in total, earning recognition and trust from consumers for half a century. The Council hopes that the new format of CHOICE Magazine will provide a more pleasant and convenient reading experience to more consumers. Looking ahead, the Council will continue to keep pace with the times, educating consumers through various channels and protecting the consumer rights of the public.
