The 26th Consumer Rights Reporting Awards (CRRA) organised by the Consumer Council is now open for applications. Interested media organisations and journalists should submit their online application forms and entry files by 24 April 2026. The presentation ceremony will be held in the fourth quarter of 2026.
In view of developments within the media industry and trends in consumer rights news reporting, the award categories of the CRRA have been refined. This year’s CRRA comprises 9 categories, namely the “Written Journalism Award”, “Audio Reporting Award”, “Video Reporting Award (Short Clip – 5 minutes or under)”, “Video Reporting Award (Long Clip – over 5 minutes)”, “News Photography Award”, “Investigative Reporting Award”, “Tertiary Student Journalism Award”, “Best Use of Social Media in Consumer Advocacy Award” and “Topical Reporting Award 2025”. To foster public engagement, the 5 finalists for both the “News Photography Award” and “Tertiary Student Journalism Award” will continue to be open for public voting.
The Topical Reporting Award draws attention to a key consumer issue that the Council highlights each year and encourages media organisations to develop reports on the topic. The Council announced the selected topic for “Topical Reporting Award 2025”—Protecting the Consumer Rights of the Silver Generation—early last year. Media members are invited to submit entries that address this topic to win a cash prize of HK$15,000. For the “Topical Reporting Award 2026”, the topic will be “Confidence and Protection in Cross-Border Consumption”. The Council aims to encourage media to cover new trends in cross-border spending, complaint handling and consumer protection issues. Entries for this topic may be submitted at the next CRRA in 2027 (i.e. the 27th CRRA).
To recognise media that effectively utilise the Council’s content to promote consumer education year‑round, the judging criteria for the “Best Use of Social Media in Consumer Advocacy” have also been refined, with the emphasis on a media channel’s overall impact and effectiveness in advocating consumer rights throughout the year. Participating media or channels will be required to submit 5 posts to demonstrate how they have consistently, creatively and effectively utilised the content published by the Council to advocate consumer rights and enhance public awareness of consumer issues.
A special distinction, the “26th CRRA Top Honour”, will also be presented this year. The winner of this top honour will be selected from the Gold Awards winners of 7 categories, excluding the “Best Use of Social Media in Consumer Advocacy Award” and the “Topical Reporting Award”, and the awardee will receive a cash prize of HK$15,000.
A prestigious annual award in the industry, the CRRA is organised by the Consumer Council with an objective to recognise journalistic excellence in consumer rights issues. The adjudication panel comprises representatives from the Consumer Council, professional organisations, academics in journalism, and media and communications veterans. The CRRA was established in 2001 to encourage news reporting on issues relating to consumer interest, so as to strengthen the public’s understanding of consumer rights and to enhance their self-protection capacity.
