The Consumer Council kickstarts its golden jubilee celebrations with the 2-day “Consumer Rights Carnival”, which officially opened today (16 March) at the shopping mall The Wai in Tai Wai. The carnival features 5 games that put participants’ wits and agility to the test, as well as informative exhibition boards and snapshot spots to enhance the public’s knowledge of the 8 Consumer Rights. To celebrate the Council’s half-century milestone, all visitors and participants will receive a variety of gifts, including 50th anniversary limited edition consumer rights flying chess sets, eco-friendly tote bags, wooden tableware sets, and thermal flasks[1]. Participants who complete all the games are eligible to enter a grand lucky draw for the chance to win reserve copies of quality test samples from past issues of CHOICE Magazine.

The opening ceremony was officiated by Mr Clement Chan Kam-wing, Chairman of the Consumer Council, Mr Tony Pang Chor-fu, Vice-Chairman of the Consumer Council, along with Mr Victor Lam Hoi-cheung, Chairman of the Council’s Publicity and Community Relations Committee, Mr Kenneth Chan Kin-nin, Vice-Chairman of the Council’s Publicity and Community Relations Committee, Ms Gilly Wong Fung-han, Chief Executive of the Consumer Council, other Council Members, and Mr Francis Ho Ying-fu, Deputy Chief Executive of the Consumer Council. The success of “Consumer Rights Week” owes its thanks to the strong support of 23 institutions and organisations[2]. Representatives from supporting partners were invited to attend the ceremony, joining hands with the Council to promote consumer rights through action.

In his welcome speech, Mr Clement Chan Kam-wing said, “Through a series of fun and thoughtfully designed games, the Council aims to enhance the public’s understanding of consumer rights and empower them to better protect themselves during consumption. Given the ever-evolving consumption environment, the Council will continue to serve as a reliable guardian for consumers. We hope that consumers can embody our 50th anniversary slogan – “Smart ConsumptionFuelling the Economy”.

During the ceremony, guests and the audience were divided into groups to participate in a calculation game, which challenged their price comparison skills in various scenarios. The participants went all out to decode the traders’ pricing strategies and showcased their smart consumption skills.

The “Consumer Rights Carnival” will take place at The Wai in Tai Wai from 16 to 17 March (Saturday and Sunday) and admission is free. The public can join 5 fun booth games designed to educate participants on the 8 Consumer Rights, including “Jigsaw Puzzle”, “Smart Fishing”, “Recycle Hub”, “Quick Sight, Swift Hands”  and “Endless Chess Fun”. Additionally, all visitors will receive a complimentary Consumer Council golden jubilee edition RFID blocking card sleeve and a stamp card. Participants can collect a stamp on the card after completing each game and redeem a gift .

Upon collecting all 5 stamps, as well as following any of the Council’s social media pages (Facebook, Instagram or WeChat), participants can enter the grand lucky draw for a chance to bring home one of almost 80 reserve copies of CHOICE Magazine test samples in satisfactory conditions, including suitcases, pressure cookers and circulator fans. The list of winners will be published on the event website, Hong Kong Economic Journal, and The Standard on 5 April 2024.

Apart from the carnival, “Consumer Rights Week” comprises a range of consumer education activities, such as the successfully concluded “Fair and Responsible Use of AI” thematic seminar. Through in-depth discussions and sharing of students’ work, the seminar aimed to improve secondary school students’ understanding of the latest trend in AI technology, provoke thoughts on the proper attitude while using AI, as well as reflecting on its impact on consumers. Furthermore, 3 consumer education talks will be organised for the general public or secondary school students with the aim of educating them on protecting their consumer rights. Topics covered include the prevention of internet and phone scams, financial technology, and financial management.
