Textbook Revision Survey - CHOICE # 373

  • 2007.11.14

The annual textbook revision survey of the Consumer Council on four selected sets of textbooks has drawn the assessment that the revisions in these textbook are "quite necessary".

The assessment criteria were based on the grading on the necessity of the revisions and the comments of two expert groups in the educational field.

The survey compared the new and old editions of 4 sets of textbooks, of which 3 were for high school students, and 1 for the matriculation classes.

The change of the numbers of pages between old and new versions was between 0 and 52 plus pages.

All of the sampled textbooks were priced higher for the revised edition as compared to the price of the old edition last year. The increases ranged from 5.0% to 7.8%.

All of the sampled textbooks met the "Three-year Rule" for revised edition, as the publications of the old editions were all in 2004.

One of the publishers of the sampled books commented that they have advised their school clients that if students using the old version need amendment tables, the schools can contact them to provide the tables to the students for free.
