Hong Kong came top in the election to the council of Consumers International (CI) at its 18th World Congress held in Sydney from October 29 to November 1.
Ms. Connie LAU, Chief Executive of Consumer Council, received the highest number of votes - 48 out of 63 voting delegates representing an equal number of countries at the Congress.
12 other countries were also voted into the governing Council of this world consumer body.
Besides being Council member, Ms. Lau was also invited to sit on the CI Executive.
With over 220 member organizations in 115 countries, CI is building a powerful international consumer movement to help promote and empower consumers everywhere.
A 3-member delegation led by the Chairman of the Council, Prof. Anthony CHEUNG Bing-leung, attended the CI world congress held once every four years.
With the theme of "Holding Corporations to Account", the congress discussed and debated on the corporate accountability and consumer demaands on the broad range of critical issues including sustainable consumption, the obesity pandemic, the ethic of drug promotion, and consumer credit and debt.
Meanwhile, at the CI World Congress, Mrs. Pamela CHAN, former Chief Executive of Consumer Council, was made a patron of CI.
