Do take time to assess and plan your purchase of HD TV set - CHOICE# 372

  • 2007.10.15

Consumers need not be in a haste to purchase new TV sets capable of receiving high definition (HD) TV broadcast due to start at the end of this year.

Contrary to rumours, your existing TV sets will continue to provide for your free viewing the TV broadcast from the two local stations.

The high definition broadcast is to be transmitted by the stations using a new frequency channel without any interruption to the existing channel.

So, unless you are particularly keen to be amongst the first to enjoy high definition TV service in Hong Kong, do take time to assess your needs and plan your purchase accordingly.

Consumers should also take note that the transmission of high definition TV broadcast will not, initially, reach each and every corner of the whole of Hong Kong. So do find out if you are in the location covered by the inaugural HD TV service.

In general, to receive HD television, consumers will need a TV receiver (external or integrated) and a TV set compatible with the video signal from the HD broadcast, and with high resolution of 720 or more pixel.

For external receiver, ensure that the output standard of the receiver matches the input standard of the HD TV set.
