Traditional CRT TV sets fare well in safety test - CHOICE # 367

  • 2007.05.15

A cathode ray tube (CRT) TV set may not be the trendiest piece of electronic equipment to decorate your home these days.

But you can count on it for reliable safety performance.

This was the verdict in a Consumer Council test report, in collaboration with the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD), on 10 models of 21-inch CRT TV sets.

The samples were put through a series of laboratory tests in accordance with international safety requirement on audio and video apparatus.

The overall test results were satisfactory with no potential hazard or danger identified. Out of 14 clauses of safety requirement, the models were able to fulfill fully 9 of the clauses. All CRT TV set models are considered safe for use.

The majority of the non-compliance concerned imperfect construction with regards to protection against electric shock. This is due mainly to lack of proper fixing of electrical wires inside the TV sets, which can be improved with better workmanship on the internal wire fixing.

Other non-compliances included: lack of marking or users' instructions, insufficient clearance and creepage distances, poor mechanical fixing and failure to fulfill the fire resistance requirement.

At the first instance upon the findings of the test, EMSD has followed up with the suppliers concerned.

The suppliers had agreed and undertaken to make corresponding improvements on the quality of their products or users' instructions. EMSD would also continue to exercise supervision of the safety improvement work.

As a safety practice, consumers are strongly advised to use the main switch to turn off the TV set rather than leaving it on standby mode by remote control.

This is all the more important if the TV set is not in use for a long time, or left unattended with no one in the house. Other safety tips:

  • Have an experienced technician to check the TV set regularly. Stop using it once malfunction is suspected or found.
  • Clean the TV set according to the given instructions regularly. Switch off before cleaning.
  • Do not place the TV set in high humidity, dusty, high temperature environment, or under direct sunlight, or near a fire source. Allow enough space for heat ventilation.
