Import ban on a kind of ice-cream from New Zealand lifted

  • 2015.12.11

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (December 11) announced that the import ban imposed on New Zealand Natural brand's Chocolate Ecstasy Ice Cream manufactured in New Zealand has been lifted with immediate effect.

The CFS found a sample of the above-mentioned ice-cream collected at the import level containing a coliform count of 360 per gram, exceeding the legal limit of 100 coliform organisms per gram, in May this year and had subsequently imposed an import ban on the affected ice-cream since May 28 to safeguard public health and food safety.

A CFS spokesman said, "The CFS has been following up on the incident closely with the New Zealand authorities since then. In view of the submission of an investigation report and the implementation of enhanced surveillance programmes and actions by the New Zealand authorities, the CFS has conducted an assessment and decided to lift the import ban imposed on Chocolate Ecstasy Ice Cream of New Zealand Natural."

The spokesman added, "The CFS will continue to monitor closely products from the brand. Appropriate actions will be taken to safeguard food safety and public health."
