Choice between DIY and agent service in air-conditioner cleaningahead of summer - CHOICE # 378

  • 2008.04.15

It's time to get your air-conditioners in shape for the summer ahead.

This means giving the machine an overhaul cleaning service to remove dirt and germs hidden deep inside the unit.

It is not just a matter of cleanliness but more importantly, it will maintain good indoor air quality free of bacterial contamination.

Secondly, it enhances energy efficiency of the air-conditioners, saving electricity cost and protecting the environment in the process.

Basically there are two ways to tackle the task, i.e. either do-it-yourself DIY, or have it done by somebody else (for example, the sole agent).

In this April issue of CHOICE is included a timely report to assist consumers in the choice between these two options.

Should you decide to do-it-yourself, there are now on the market air-conditioner cleaners at relatively low cost.

The Consumer Council examined the labeling of 9 cleaners and 1 filter cleaners, and found 2 of them to be insufficient in user instruction and product information written in Chinese and/or English.

The sales agents concerned were subsequently contacted for improvement to assure proper usage of their products by consumers.

The Council also found the alkalinity of some cleaners to vary from slight to strong (pH 14). Consumers should therefore handle with care and prevent direct contact with skin and eyes when using these products.

Consumers are reminded that inappropriate methods used to clean the air-conditioners may lead to damage of the internal parts (specially for those models without drainage duct) and the special coating on the condenser and evaporator.

Other tips for DIY air-conditioner cleaning are:

  • Assess your ability if you could clean it yourself.
  • Read the label of the cleaners, understand the working procedure and check if the cleaning agent is applicable to your air-conditioner(s).
  • Open the windows for better ventilation, and unplug the machine for electrical safety before cleaning.
  • Wear gloves and safety goggles during application.
  • Wash the filter regularly, once or twice a month.

If your choice is to engage the service of a sole agent - a total of 18 brands of air-conditioners were surveyed for reference of consumers - the fee payable will depend on whether it is a window-type ($295 - $570) or split-type for both indoor and outdoor units ($350 - $3,000 which includes removal and re-installation).

Some service providers charged different rates to consumers in or out of the warranty period. Out-of-warranty consumers may be charged extra onsite examination fees, collection and delivery fees.

The Council drew the attention of consumers to the need to provide a safe working platform for the cleaning work especially if it is outdoor.

  • Employ qualified workers to erect and dismantle scaffolding or arrange for the use of gondola if the building is installed with it.
  • Purchase public liability insurance, and ensure the service provider has also employees' compensation insurance covered for the workers, and adequate safety devices and measures taken.
  • Ensure that the workers are holders of valid certificates of basic safety training (commonly known as the "Green Card"), and in the case of operating the gondola, valid certificates in gondola operation.
