The Consumer Council was established in
April 1974 at a time of inflationary prices and widespread public
concern about profiteering. Although the main financial source of
the Council is in the form of an annual Government subvention, the
Council enjoys total independence in formulating and implementing
its own policy.
The Consumer Council Ordinance came into
force on 15.7.77 to provide for the incorporation of the Consumer
Council and to protect Council Members and employees from personal
liability for the bona fide acts and omissions of the Council and
Committees.
