Consumer Council's Test on Split-type Air conditioners - CHOICE # 427 (May 15, 2012)

The Consumer Council recently conducted a test on 15 models of cooling-only split-type room air conditioners with claimed cooling capacities of 2.5 kW to 2.8 kW (or "1 horsepower" unit) and prices ranging from HK$3,080 (excluding basic installation service) to $5,890 (including basic installation service).

Price Survey on Fresh Pork and Beef - CHOICE # 427 (May 15, 2012)

A study conducted by the Consumer Council found the differences between the average retail prices of pork and beef and the average wholesale prices of live pigs and cattle had widened in the same period of time. The widened differences were 26% and 14% respectively.

Total recall of mercury-tainted proprietary Chinese medicine (May 8, 2012)

The Department of Health (DH) today (May 8) ordered a licensed wholesaler of a proprietary Chinese medicine, Kin Kwok Trading Co (Kin Kwok), to recall from consumer a registered proprietary Chinese medicine (pCm), [Hu Qiu] Niu Huang Xiao Yan Wan (registration no: HKP-09321), as it has been found to contain excessive mercury.

Test results showed that the use of devices that claim to cut down on fuel consumption when placed on the gas stove can increase the concentration of the highly lethal carbon monoxide (CO) gas in excess of the safety standard.
