The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department today (February 6) urged the public not to consume a batch of gold-needle mushrooms imported from Japan that might contain glass fragments. The trade should also stop selling the products concerned.

A spokesman for the CFS said the centre had learned earlier that the manufacturer in Japan had announced on its website the recall of a batch of gold-needle mushrooms suspected to contain glass fragments. Product details are as follows:

Place of origin: Nagano Prefecture, Japan
Product code: 0434
Packing size: 100 grammes and 200 grammes
Production date: February 1 and 2, 2012

"Once the CFS became aware of the case, it immediately notified local retailers. The CFS learned that major retailers had not sold any of the affected products. To ensure safety, they have removed different batches of the products from shelves," the spokesman said.

He advised consumers who have bought products in the affected batch not to consume the products. The trade should also stop selling the affected batch.

So far, the CFS has not received any reports of people feeling unwell after consumption of the affected products or complaints about them.

The spokesman said, "The CFS will continue to follow up on the case and liaise closely with the trade and the Japanese authority."
